Since it’s closing in on Halloween, we thought we would celebrate by sharing something truly freaky (or cute?) with you all. Have you seen this short timelapse video we recorded at our house showing the utter craziness of the frogs in Thailand during the rainy season?
By this point you may or may not be considering a life in Thailand or in another country other than your own. One thing you may have forgotten to consider are some of the pests you may encounter in you new host country. Although this surely doesn’t happen everywhere, we were definitely in for a surprise when the rainy season formed a small pond next to our house that quickly became the home to what seemed to be every single one of the frogs in Thailand!
How Bad Are the Frogs in Thailand?
Before you get too alarmed, we should tell you that this actually only happened
for about the first three weeks of the rainy season. Every time it would start to rain the frogs would come out of the pond, hop a short distance into our driveway, and then begin climbing up the walls on either side. We were a little worried because each time it would occur it was evident that the frogs were getting bigger and bigger. We could only imagine if they had stuck around when they became full-grown!

Now, we weren’t scared of these harmless (non poisonous) little frogs, but it was definitely a bit of an inconvenience. It always seemed to start raining right when we got hungry and needed to hop (pun intended) on the motorbike to grab a bite to eat. Not wanting to squish a hundred little frogs in the process, we would have to wait until their numbers dwindled down. They would clear out when it stopped raining and the sun started to reemerge.

Where were all of these frogs headed? What was over the wall they so desperately climbed? Nothing! Just another driveway identical to ours. It was like they were running an obstacle course with the world’s largest hurdles.
Sometimes the frogs would just stick (literally) around and hang out for a while if it didn’t stop raining. So, how do you get rid of frogs in Thailand? Well, occasionally we would have to turn the hose on and gently spray them out of our driveway, usually inadvertently towards our neighbors house…whoops!
We can only imagine the animals in Thailand we will see next. So, during your travels have you ever experienced anything like our “Invasion of the frogs in Thailand?” What kind of pests do you encounter where you live now?

They are baby frogs – the next stage up from tadpoles.
Hi Chris and Angela,
I have been following your many interesting blogs about Thailand and I have to say that
I have never came across such tiny frogs as shown above. Really fascinating and freaky.
They were particularly cute, which is why we took such precaution using the hose to get the off our patio area instead of squishing them with our motorbike. So many and so tiny!
I’d love to see a horde of tiny frogs coming my way! When traveling in Ecuador, we ran into a similar plague after the first big rainfall of the year, except ours was locusts! Nasty!

What fun! I love seeing new wildlife whenever I am traveling somewhere. Nice they weren’t IN the house for sure!
If they got in our townhouse, our cat inevitably hunted them down… It’s great having him around to get rid of the creepy crawly things that don’t belong inside.
I think they’re cute!
As long as they’re outside the house!! ;)
Too cool! Too cute! It’s raining luck :D
haha yea we weren’t freaked out by it. They are so small!
I kind of want one…are you selling?
Fresh out…check back next August :)
We lived in Siem Reap, Cambodia for over 2 months during the raining seasons and we had the same problem. There were plenty of little frogs, bugs and cockroaches around our house. We got used to them after 2 weeks or so :).
Yea, at first it freaked us out, but we were more amazed by it more than anything. It was so predictable after the first couple rains. We would just sit, wait, and then watch them do this for an hour…blew our minds! haha
They’re so cute! The frogs in Hawaii are quite the opposite…they barely fit in your hand!
haha we have some of those too! Fatties with bright yellow stripes that sounds like cows…guess those are actually toads though :)
Never saw this phenomenon on any of my trips to Thailand but I was always intrigued by the numbers and size of the geckoes. I was not familiar with them and on my first trip I awoke during the night to a strange sound, turned on the light and was staring at dozens of them – some 6 or more inches long. I might add that this was not in a hotel but in a small house in a rural area.
Yes, the lizards are everywhere. We actually quite like having them around since they keep the mosquitoes that do get in our house under control. Only the strong survive in our house though because our cat hunts them relentlessly…he is obsessed!
Wow – that is a LOT of frogs! lol I knew I’d have to contend with mosquitoes during the rainy season in Chiang Mai, but it never occurred to me that there would be sooooo many frogs!
I know! It was unreal the first time we saw it…but then every time it rained it would happen. Mind blowing!
I think they’re adorable…does that make me weird?? haha :)
Haha! No, we think they are pretty darn cute ourselves…they stunk though! Smelled like a swamp for the 3 weeks they were hanging out here haha
They will be hungry after trekking across your driveway and up the wall. Just how many mosquitoes can they eat in a day?
Haha, well they must be doing a great job because we have a pond next to our house and we rarely see any mosquitoes! No complaints here :)
Did they make any noise? They’re so tiny!
I don’t know if these guys makes noise, but they have some loud uncles in the pond next to us. They sound like mooing cows! :)
